Myotherapy is a person-centred health care approach focused on identifying and addressing musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. Qualified professionals draw on clinical knowledge, problem-solving ability, and hands-on techniques to design a care plan that aligns with the client’s specific health goals.
Myotherapists are equipped to support the prevention, early treatment, and ongoing management of chronic musculoskeletal issues. Techniques used may involve massage, cupping, dry needling, joint mobilisation, education, exercise programs, and more.

How can a myotherapist help?
Myotherapists provide evidence-informed assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation for a wide range of musculoskeletal pain and associated conditions caused by muscle or myofascial dysfunction.
The myofascial system is made up of fine, fibrous layers that wrap around muscles, along with connective tissues such as tendons and ligaments.
When patients’ symptoms have settled, treatment then focuses on restoring movement through modifying activity, helping to reduce the risk of further injury and keeping you moving and feeling your best.
Which therapy techniques are part of a myotherapist’s care?
Our practitioners use a range of hands-on treatment techniques to reduce pain and treat postural imbalances, including:
- Myofascial release
- Deep tissue, sports, and/or remedial massage
- Trigger point therapy
- Dry needling
- Cupping
- Muscle stretching
- Hot or cold therapy
- Joint mobilisation
- Muscle energy techniques
- Soft tissue manipulation
- Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy
- Corrective exercises
What should I know about my first myotherapy appointment?
The first step in your myotherapy consultation involves a detailed subjective examination. This may include questions about where you feel pain, how the issue started, your daily activities, medical background, and what you hope to achieve through treatment.
Next, your therapist will carry out a detailed assessment focusing on areas of discomfort, posture, and movement restrictions. Using these findings, they will identify contributing factors and collaborate with you on a tailored management plan.
How can myotherapy support your health?
Myotherapy plays a role in improving both physical function and overall well-being, including:
- Pain relief (by targeting trigger points and addressing mechanical causes of pain)
- Reduced inflammation and blood flow
- Improved mobility and flexibility
- Greater muscular strength
- Less muscle stiffness
- Improved posture
- Less physical and mental strain
- Enhanced sleep patterns
- Better mood balance
It also plays a role in enhancing athletic performance by helping athletes increase their range of motion, reduce fatigue, and improve their movement efficiency. All of this may help with injury prevention.
How does myotherapy differ from massage therapy and which one is right for me?
Myotherapy includes remedial massage techniques such as lymphatic drainage, but its focus extends much further. Your myotherapist aims to achieve long-term results by addressing both symptoms and contributing factors.
Remedial massage is a common tool used across several modalities that can help with short-term pain relief and has a therapeutic purpose. Relaxation massage, on the other hand, is typically used to promote relaxation and does not offer therapeutic benefits (although it has been found to relieve muscle tension).
